Occupational therapists evaluate the patient’s ability to perform skills of daily living. Once goals are established, treatment focuses on activities and techniques to improve self care skills, functional mobility, and/or light homemaking performance. Occupational therapists address problems with coordination, strength, endurance, perception, and cognition that interfere with the patient’s ability to perform activities of daily living.
Occupational therapists may recommend or provide assistive devices, splints, and/or durable medical equipment that enable a patient to reach a maximum level of independent functioning, and provide patient/family education prior to discharge.
